In 2006, beekeepers around the world began reporting a strange and troubling phenomenon -- the population of their hives was shrinking dramatically, with the insects disappearing for reasons unknown to their minders, and in time close to a third of the world's honeybee population had seemingly vanished. While this was of great concern to people who produced honey for market, they were not the only ones worried; bees help pollinate many major cash crops, including a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts and beans, and what's come to be known as Colony Collapse Disorder has far-reaching consequences for the international agricultural community. With bees involved in the growth of forty percent of the world's food, restoring the global bee population is of crucial importance, and filmmaker... Less

In 1976, David Klein was a candy distributor who had a brainstorm -- make the world's best jelly beans, and create a store just to sell them. Klein came up with new recipes for jellybeans that used natural ingredients and flavored the inside filling as well as the shells. Several years later, Klein's Jelly Belly jelly beans were on the market, and while business was slow at first with a little press attention and an unpaid celebrity endorsement from then-president Ronald Reagan, the gourmet jelly beans became a massive success. However, while Klein was a great candy maker, he wasn't much of a businessman; he was pressured into selling the Jelly Belly trademark to the company that manufactured the candy just as the product was taking off nationally, and not only was he cut out of most of... This is thug filmmaking at its best courtesy of Damon Dash and his Roc-A-Fella crew with Dash directing writing and co-starring as a "cakeaholic" money addict on the quest for international greatness in the Philadelphia drug-dealing biz. Beans Beanie Sigel is his main competition but he's in jail for crimes perpetrated in the first film ironically Sigel himself went to jail for gun-related offences after shooting of the film was completed. Fellow inmate Loco N.O.R.E. promises to get Beans sprung and hook him up with some "kingpin paper" and a "sweet connect." Viewers who don't know this means money and a drug supplier may be a bit baffled by the film's Philly slang-enriched dialogue but Beans' narration fills in a lot of the gaps. Another plus there is a plethora of guest stars like Kayne... Less

The road is an enduring theme in American culture; from The Wizard of Oz to Thelma and Louise, and from Bonnie and Clyde to Natural Born Killers, cinematic portrayals of road journeys continually captivate the American imagination. But what is so American about the genre and why does it translate well to some countries but not others? In The Road Movie Book, Steven Cohan and Ina Rae Hark collect essays that attempt to answer these, as well as other questions, about one of the key genres of modern cinema. Organized into three sections, the first, Mapping Boundaries, contains essays that sketch broad themes and ideological tropes of the genre. The following section, American Roads, further historicizes the issues raised in section one and traces the continual reinvention of the genre in... Less

Director John Carpenter teams up for the first time with his favorite actor, Kurt Russell, in this biography of Elvis Aaron Presley. Beginning with his humble beginnings as a country boy without a father, the film chronicles Elvis's journey to the height fame, his Las Vegas comeback, and his eventual death. The details of the King's life are dealt with in a sensitive, honest manner, focusing on both the success and the failure with equal weight. The personal tragedies of his family life give insight into the most famous entertainer of the twentieth century, and Russell delivers a layered, fully developed performance as Elvis Presley. John Carpenter shows he has the skills to tell a story that deals with universal human issues without exploiting the characters or the story, talents he... Less

After creating the visually impressive film THE CELL in 2000, director Tarsem Singh dropped his last name to become simply Tarsem. His follow up, THE FALL, is just as beautiful as his previous work and features a stamp of approval from David Fincher and Spike Jonze. Like those celebrated directors, Tarsem got his start in the highly visual medium of music videos, and THE FALL is appropriately one of the most striking films to hit the screen in recent memory. Set in Los Angeles in 1915, the story revolves around a five-year-old girl (Catinca Untaru) named Alexandria, who wanders around a hospital after breaking her arm. There she meets bedridden Roy (Lee Pace of PUSHING DAISIES), a Hollywood stuntman who is paralyzed after an ill-fated attempt to impress a woman. Roy beguiles Alexandria... Less

Translating Rowan Atkinson's Mr. Bean character from British television to the big screen takes a bit of a toll, but there are some hilarious sequences in this popular comedy. Bean, a boy-man twit with a knack for getting into difficult binds (and then making them worse and worse and worse), is a London museum guard who is sent to Los Angeles in the company of the famous painting Whistler's Mother. He's mistaken as an art expert by the well-meaning curator (Peter MacNicol) of an L.A. museum, but Bean's famously eccentric behavior soon causes the poor guy to almost lose his family and job. The insularity of Bean's TV world is sacrificed in this film, and that change diminishes some of the character's appeal. But Atkinson is a man naturally full of comedy, and he doesn't let his fans down... Less

Stitch! the movie Disney sets a record for bringing out a direct-to-video sequel after the initial film. Stitch: The Movie arrives only a year after the enjoyable Lilo & Stitch played theaters and reunites the title character (otherwise known as Experiment 626) with his earth-bound family in the warm Hawaiian sun. The story has a nice set-up: since Stitch is Experiment 626, where are the first 625 invented by Dr. Jumba Jookiba? Odds are the island paradise will soon be spaceport central for many more aliens. As with other made-for-video Disney titles, the animation is not as complex or rich. This hurts this sequel even more since the original film had such a unique, pastel beauty. Unfortunately, the other elements of the film are just as flat. Even though most of the original voice cast... Less

For the newcomer or die-hard fan, this greatest-hits collection includes snippets from several Bean masterpieces. Among the 10 or so generous clips are Bean's extraordinary difficulties getting out of a parking garage without his pass, his "twit dance" alongside a street musician (okay, a musician at a tube stop), his problems keeping awake at church, and his greatest, uh, triumph in preparing to meet the queen with his fly open. Essential comedy and exceptionally funny. --Tom Keogh

As the caretaker of Britain's Royal National Gallery, he is sent to the Grierson Gallery in Los Angeles to accompany "Whistler's Mother." His misadventures begin on the trans-Atlantic flight and go on from there to their ultimate conclusion.

Pierce Brosnan is outstanding as an international hit man falling apart at the seams in Richard Shepard's dark comedy THE MATADOR. Brosnan riffing on his success playing the very well groomed and genteel James Bond and Remington Steele stars as Julian Noble a no-longer-noble hit man who spends his free time getting drunk and chasing impossibly young skirts. In Mexico he meets Danny Wright Greg Kinnear an average Joe trying to land an important business deal. Jealous of Danny's simple life Julian becomes friends with the Denver suburbanite who married his high school sweetheart Bean the very good Hope Davis but lost his young son in a terrible accident. Five children save the life of a dog-like alien while at a self-run summer camp. He attempts to reward them by taking them to an alien colony on the Moon. Events take a turn for the worse when his report on that attack that injured him causes passage from the Moon to the Earth to be banned, and children are stranded in space. The children need to find a way back home before camp ends and their parents discover that they are missing. They also have to avoid the poachers that injured their alien friend, and now seem to be stalking them all.
