Deep Cover

Made during the black film boom that followed the success of BOYZ N THE HOOD, DEEP COVER is that rare and beautiful thing--a genuinely smart action movie. Screenwriters Michael Tolkin (THE PLAYER) and Henry Bean have written a clever but gritty, hard-hitting script, and director Bill Duke (A RAGE IN HARLEM) brings just the right tone to the material. It has an appropriately gloomy palette of glaring reds and dark blues and a dissonant, hip-hop-influenced score that enhances the sardonic mood. Laurence Fishburne narrates and stars in the challenging role of Russell Stevens Jr., an undercover cop who finds himself slipping onto the wrong side of the law. The federal agent who runs the undercover operation (Charles Martin Smith) tells Stevens to enjoy his drug-dealer lifestyle. And when the motives of the government Stevens works for come into question, the line between cop and criminal gets even more blurred. Stevens, the somber cop, has the perfect counterpoint in David Jason (Jeff Goldblum), the hilariou...

Deep Cover is a movie you need to rent. It's a movie about the duality of human nature. Are we good or evil? Is there a thin line between the two?

The movie opens with a graphic scene of a young boy whose father commits a crime and is murdered. The boy vows never to follow in his father's... Read full review »

When You Look Long Into An Abyss, The Abyss Also Looks Into You

Pros Two great performances, and an interesting visual style
Cons Unnecessary sub plots
Recommended it? Yes

Early in Deep Cover a devious cop tells Laurence Fishburne: "I'm God. I know everything". God is a recuring theme in this film. Or, at least, the absence of God is.

Deep Cover was penned by Michael Tolkin (The Player, Gleaming the Cube). The screenplay bares a passing resemblance to Rush... Read full review »

Deep Cover [VHS]

Bill Duke (A Rage in Harlem) directed this edgy action yarn that stretches the barriers of the genre. It explores the fine line between good and evil, while testing the resolve of a moral man seduced by an easier, more pleasurable lifestyle. Although the plot eventually becomes too overblown and earnest, Deep Cover proves far more intelligent than the average action pic. Laurence Fishburne is the straight-arrow undercover cop who gets so far into his assumed identity that he has trouble recognizing the good guys from the bad. The characters, all flawed, are fleshed out and believable as they face their decisions with questions and doubt, unlike most in this genre. Jeff Goldblum provides smarmy comic relief as an eccentric mid-level drug dealer/attorney who is probably a psychopath and most definitely paving his path to hell. --Rochelle O'Gorman
