Diary of a Mad Black Woman - mean-spirited surrealistic soap opera
It was comedy (of errors) night at our house. After cooking all day, it was time to take a break and enjoy the family. "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" sounded like a good bet. Grandmother Madea (Tyler Perry in drag) looks funny enough on the cover of the DVD, and the few clips we'd seen looked light... Read full review »
Not a lot of tears, but plenty of jerks in this movie.
I rented this movie without reading the overview because it was recommended to me by someone. I thought the movie was just okay at best. My husband couldn't even make it through the movie but popped in for certain scenes. Although the movie was pretty predicable, the timing of events made the movie... Read full review »
Diary of a Mad Black Woman is an audience pleaser
Diary of a Mad Black Woman, is the film version of Tyler Perry's stage play of the same name. Tyler is an unconventional playwright, whose works are very familiar to urban audiences, who may not make the trek to Broadway, but are more than willing to travel to urban showcases for a taste of the... Diary of a Mad Black Woman
Diary of a Mad Black Woman bills itself as a comedy, but don't be fooled. Even the name of the movie sounds like it ought to be a comedy. Let me tell you straight up that this is not a comedy. It has some outrageously funny moments, but the core plot is more like something off the Lifetime network... Read full review »
I was pleasantly surprised
After I wrote what I did below, I glanced through some of the other reviews. This is among the most widely and wildly rated movies I've seen in a long time. Since the story is relatively simple, I sort of found that shocking (just a note a propos of very little).

A Scorned Woman Writes of Her Cocky Husband
I now think of marriage like I think about living in my home state of Minnesota. You move into marriage in the springtime of hope, but eventually arrive at the
Minnesota winter, with its cold and darkness. Many of us are tempted to give up and move south at this point, not realizing that maybe...

This guy was PLAYING with FIRE
If you're female, you will probably enjoy this movie. Men will undoubtedly love it, too. But I believe The Diary of a Mad Black Woman is prone to give women more in the way of character identification, mainly because the leading role is played by a female character who is easy to like and empathize... I'm not bitter. I'm mad as hell!
Diary of a Mad Black Woman is a powerful work produced by Tyler Perry, featuring the shake and breakdown of an eighteen-year marriage in which a young woman, Helen [Kimberly Elise], is forced to come to terms with her own rage, abandonment, and fury while mending broken relationships with her... Diary of a Mad Black Woman and she had every reason to be mad!
I love Tyler Perry's movies. He does a good job getting me to feel what this character Helen McCarter, played by Kimberly Elsie (the mad black woman) is going through. There are two stories going on in this movie that is very touchy and had me in tears because it reminds me of someone I know who... Read full review »
Tyler Perry is the man, woman... or whatever!
To be honest since I work in a movie store I don't rent movies because of reccommendations anymore, I just like to watch movies with great titles. I looked at the cover for Diary of a Mad Black Woman and thought it was going to be just another movie that was just comedy with no substance involved... Read full review »

Diary Of A Mad Black Woman - Dvd
Genres and genders collide in this unusual mix of Christian soap opera and raunchy cross-dressing comedy. Tyler Perry adapts his own play--one of a series wherein he personally portrays Grandma Madea, an overweight, no-nonsense, old, Christian, African-American woman. In DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN, the main character is Helen (Kimberly Elise), whose wealthy, abusive husband Charles (Steve Harris) kicks her out of their mansion after 18 years of marriage. Luckily Grandma Madea is there to offer some tough love. When a gangster's bullet later makes Charles a cripple, Helen has to decide between love (i.e. wreaking Madea-sanctioned old testament vengeance) and Christian duty. The movie then progresses in two directions: the well-acted dramatic side, with Helen getting her life together thanks to the love of the dreamy Orlando (YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS star Shemar Moore) and her hospitalized momma (Cecily Tyson); and the go-for-broke humor side, with Harris whooping it up in unfettered glee as the chainsaw-wielding
