Pros Beautiful, Romantic, epic tale: Sharif. Steiger, and Courtenay
Cons A bit long for modern audiences
Recommended it? Yes

One of the most romantic epics every filmed, Doctor Zhivago was an immensely popular film in it?s day. Because I had really loved this movie in the theaters, I was afraid to watch it. Frankly I didn?t think it could live up to my memory of it. To my surprise, it was almost as good now, after 37... Read full review »

If your love for Doctor Zhivago is unqualified, you may not enjoy reading this review. For that matter, if your scorn for the film knows no bounds, you probably will find much to disagree with in this review as well. In my opinion, the Academy mostly got it right in relation to this particular film... Read full review »

DR. ZHIVAGO (1965)

David Lean's movies have some common characteristics: epic themes, big characters, brilliant British actors, vast panoramas, casts of thousands, recurring themes, loving camera work, L-o-o-o-n-g running times. When the formula works it is very, very good, unfortunately... Read full review »

I?*HATE* Lara?s Theme. Can I tell you how much? No? I'll tell you anyway.

Pros The beginning of the movie.
Cons Lara's theme, those stupid flower/field scenes.
Recommended it? No

I'm a sucker for historical epics, but David Lean's Dr. Zhicago is a key example as to why they went out of style for a few decades. It's got a lot going for it: romance, recurring themes musically and story-wise, a nice-looking cast, a story set against the backdrop of the Bolshevik Revolution... Read full review »

The story mainly covers the time 1905 to 1921, and tells us about Yuri Zhivago, a young man in Russian, who is a physician and a poet. Great date movie, limping epic

I first saw Dr. Zhivago on a blind date, back when I was in high school. All of the guys were taking the girls to see this movie because they thought that it was a sure way to get past first base. (No, I am not telling; nice girls don't tell.)

You just had to be there to understand the... Read full review »

There are only two kinds of people, as far as this picture is concerned; those who love it, and those who can't stand it. There are virtually no viewers who can say "Ehh, it was OK, but nothing to get excited about." I have my own idea of why this is.

It's impossible to see this film and... Read full review »

I have, ever since my first review on epinions, known that eventually I would write about my favorite film, "Doctor Zhivago."  I love this movie so much that I have never even been tempted to read the book.  I understand the 21st-century update of the film was more faithful to the source material,... This movie is based on Boris Pasternak?s Nobel Prize winning novel, which follows Dr. Zhivago through the Russian Revolution. Although this movie/book was written for entertainment purposes, it still offers a somewhat valuable historical perspective of the Russian Revolution.

Doctor Zhivago - Dvd Boxset

David Lean's DOCTOR ZHIVAGO is an exploration of the Russian Revolution as seen from the point of view of the intellectual, introspective title character (Omar Sharif). As the political landscape changes, and the Czarist regime comes to an end, Dr. Zhivago's relationships reflect the political turmoil raging about him. Though he is married, the vagaries of war lead him to begin a love affair with the beautiful Lara (Julie Christie). But he cannot escape the machinations of a band of selfish and cruel characters: General Strelnikov (Tom Courtenay), a Bolshevik General; Komarovsky (Rod Steiger), Lara's former lover; and Yevgraf (Alec Guinness), Zhivago's sinister half-brother. This epic, sweeping romance, told in flashback, captures the lushness of Moscow before the war and the violent social upheaval that followed. The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Boris Pasternak.
