Pros The setting in Monterey County, a distant relationship to the book.
Cons Screenplay hindered by what the producers thought the Code would allow.

Elia Kazan's colourful adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel

byDavidMac Apr 20, 2006

Pros great melodrama, great colour, etc.
Cons James Dean is one oddball (see review)
Recommended it? Yes

In terms of appearance, East of Eden (1955) is certainly my kind of movie. It's a widescreen melodrama in bright colourful hues. If I were a filmmaker with access to lots of money, I'd shoot every single movie this way, possibly even if the story didn't warrant it, just because there is drama in... Read full review »

§ A family affair:

In California's Salinas Valley, 1917, Adam Trask (Raymond Massey)—“not a worldly man”—works the land with his two sons Caleb (James Dean) and Aron (Richard Davalos). Adam is developing refrigeration to reach a larger market. Caleb is... Read full review »

Pros Cast, cinematography, direction, writing.
Cons Method acting may not appeal to some.

Elia Kazan is one of America's greatest and most controversial directors. His best films are always so close, so personal to him. They are intensely acted and full of emotion. On the other hand, he has stirred controversy because he squealed when he testified to the House Un-American Activities... Read full review »

Dean as Cal Trask

bychinafrog Jul 5, 2000
12 Helpfuls 13 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros good acting
Cons a bit lengthy
Recommended it? Yes

From the beginning, the audience realizes that this story will chronicle Cal?s emotional life. A close-up of Cal?s face is shown. When he sees his mother, who doesn?t know him, his face is distorted by the agony of seeing her. Although the film is set before WWI, it has the isolation and moodiness... Read full review »

Pros James Dean
Cons only the last third of an incredible novel

This 1955 movie based on the last third of the Steinbeck novel of the same name is a true cinema MASTERPIECE! I'm not just saying that because I am a huge James Dean fan.

I did initially see this movie strictly for the James Dean factor. But I'd be lying if I said it didn't affect me on a... Read full review »

James Dean featuring East Of Eden.

Pros James Dean is in it, Camera work, and that one scene with daddy is epic.
Cons Camera work, and sometimes other actors get in the way of James Dean.
Recommended it? Yes

I saw East Of Eden purely for James Dean's appearance. I have no prior knowledge of any books titled East Of Eden other than there hazy existence, and nor do I care, for me it is all about Dean. There may in fact be other actors involved in this film, but I've yet to care from inside my James Dean... Read full review »

Prior to entering the 10th grade, one of our assigned summer reading books was East of Eden. I read the entire book in a couple of weeks (hey, it was summer after all) and loved every bit of it. Not long after finishing the book, I saw that a movie based on the book would be on television, I... Read full review »

This is one of my all time favorite movies. It is a drama with little of what you would call action, yet it is a classic unlike any other film I have seen. I saw it on TV several years ago and watch it whenever it is on again.

James Dean plays the leading character, and he makes his role... Read full review »

When I was in high school I was fortunate enough to take Drama and have a great teacher. One movie he had us watch was "East of Eden" and to this day it is still one of my favorite movies. I think James Dean as Cal Trask was an inspiring choice.

East of Eden [VHS]

East of Eden is an acknowledged classic, and the starring debut of James Dean lifts it to legendary status. John Steinbeck's novel gave director Elia Kazan a perfect Cain-and-Abel showcase for Dean's iconic screen persona, casting the brooding star as Cal, the younger of two brothers vying for the love of their Bible-thumping father (Raymond Massey) in Monterey, California, at the dawn of World War I. Massey is a lettuce farmer, striving for market domination with an ill-fated refrigeration scheme. Having discovered that his presumed-dead mother (Oscar® winner Jo Van Fleet) is a brothel owner in nearby Salinas, Cal convinces her to finance an investment that will restore his father's lost fortune, but neither money nor the tenderness of his brother's fiancée (Julie Harris) can assuage Cal's anguished need for paternal acceptance that comes nearly too late. Kazan's oblique camera angles and Dean's tortured emoting may seem extreme by latter-day standards, but their theatrics make East of Eden a timeless tale of family secrets and hard-won affection. --Jeff Shannon
