Superheros, Zoot Suits, And Looney Tunes

Pros Great special effects and slapstick comedy, Jim Carrey's dual roles
Cons Over developed plot
Recommended it? Yes

I have never been a big fan of Jim Carrey's bizarre, screwball humor. I prefer seeing him as the mythical Everyman against the world he personifies in The Majestic and The Truman Show. The most appealing feature of Carrey's role in the 1994 comedy fantasy film The Mask, is that he is able to... Read full review »

Stanley Ipkiss, A Nice Guy

Pros Great special effects
Cons A little old for some children
Recommended it? Yes

The movie "Mask" starring Jim Carrey, is in my opinion, a very funny movie.

Stanley Ipkiss, the proverbial nice guy, always seem a little too meek and too mild to deal with people who continually run over him. His boss is a "typical rich boy" who has never had to do anything on his own... Read full review »

The Mask: Jim Carrey Puts It On

Pros Jim Carrey's abilities shine without going too far over the top - mostly. The dog.
Cons silly story. violence, language and mature themes make this a non-kids movie.
Recommended it? Yes

My first concious exposure to Jim Carrey on the big screen came in Dumb and Dumber (hated it!) and Ace Ventura (hated it more). (I had seen him previously in Earth Girls Are Easy, but he didn't really register there.) When the opportunity came to rent the Mask (I never saw it on the big screen) I... Read full review »

The year 1994 contains three of my favorite Jim Carrey movies including Dumb and Dumber , Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (not its sequel), and The Mask . Starring alongside Peter Riegert , Peter Greene and Cameron Diaz in her first movie role, The Mask is a comedy that will be sure to get... Read full review »

Cartoon-inspired Comedic Genius

Pros Brilliant Physical Comedy
Cons If you don't love physical comedy, you will hate this movie
Recommended it? Yes

This movie is simply brilliant. A lot of people figure that because it draws so heavily on cartoons, it must be simplistic... fools, I say!

The plot is simple, but with an incredible number of plot devices that pay off much later in the film. Take the protagonist's dog, Milo. Early in the... Read full review »

Pros CGI
Fun
Cons Fairly Narrow Plot
Poorly Developed Romance

In the history of comic book to film adaptations, there's been a fair amount of success and failure. The Mask is a film that falls somewhere in between.

According to the comics, the Mask is a physical mask that removes the social taboos from its wearer. If you're a hopeless romantic,... Read full review »

Pros Very funny. There is a number of genres mixed in the movie.
Cons None.

The Mask is a great movie. It has everything. It has romance, comedy and action. This movie is for just about anybody.

Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carey) is the tongue-tied Mr. Nice Guy. He works in the bank where his boss is a crook. His landlady is a mean witch. His friend, Charlie (Richard... Read full review »

Pros Jim Carrey, Cameron Diaz, great movie
Cons not many

The Mask, (which I think really is the title, it seems epinions left off the "The"), is a very funny, very captivating comedy. It stars your favorite and mine: Jim Carrey as Stanley Ipkiss, a very Darrin Stevens like bank worker, with shades of Jimmy Stewart in "It's a Wonderful Life". And you... Read full review »

Mask DVD

Boring bank account officer Stanley Ipkiss Jim Carrey is tired of kowtowing to his know-nothing boss and being rejected by attractive women. But just before he decides to end it all Stanley is transformed from a spineless accountant into a jiving zoot-suited hellion when he discovers the superhuman powers of an ancient wooden mask he finds floating in the river. With the mask Stanley has the courage to do everything he's ever dreamed of. That includes wooing blond bombshell Tina Carlyle Cameron Diaz a torchy singer at the swanky nightclub Coco Bongo. Too bad Tina's caught up with mobster Dorian Tyrel a brutal villain planning to rob Stanley's bank and take over the city! Now it's up to Stanley to rid the besieged metropolis of Tyrel. Based on the Dark Horse comic book THE MASK introduced Diaz to audiences and helped cement Carrey's fame after ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE. Its story of a human cartoon courtesy of computer effects and Carrey's talent for impressions was a perfect fit for the comedian's pliable facial features.
