The Coolpix 8700 Nikon joins the 8 megapixel club

byHoward_Creech May 2, 2004

Pros 8X Nikkor Zoom, 8 megapixel resolution
Cons Cons: Noisy images at ISO 400, AF hunts in low light, weak battery
Recommended it? Yes

Over the last couple of years Nikon has been losing market share to other manufacturers, but that negative sales trend may be due to change. Nikon's R&D folks have introduced two very exciting new digital cameras (the Coolpix 8700 and the D70 digital SLR) that are likely to put Nikon firmly back in... Read full review »

Good Mid Level Digital Camera

Pros Stylish, good quality photos, large memory capacity.
Cons big and clunky, gets an error message a lot
Recommended it? Yes

Let me state right away that I am not a camera professional or claim to be a techno guru. Far from it, I am a new mom who wanted to take loads of photos and share with family on the web. I know what I want out of a camera and that's about it. If you are looking for a technical expert and pixel size... Read full review »

Absolutely the best digital camera I've used yet

byFekIhr Jul 1, 2004
13 Helpfuls 14 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Amazing zoom, incredible quality, color perfection, expandability, compatibility, uses CF...
Cons Too many features! (Not exactly bad, but there's a learning curve), no CF media
Recommended it? Yes

Don't you just love that new plastic smell – like when you pull this camera out of the box? Yeah, of course! Mine smelled like that about a month back. Now it's got a pleasant combo of camera bag & sweet, yet tangy barbecue sauce – that got spilled on the bag during a long shooting session. Hah!... Read full review »

Very Nice But...

Pros Great images, light and easy to use, many options
Cons Noise, battery life.
Recommended it? Yes

I've just come from a trip in Holland, Finland and Estonia. Made 1500 images under all sorts of conditions. First, the bad news: battery life is short, too short. On a trip you need at least two of them to keep you around. I even kept a 2CR5 ready in case I 'had' to make an image. The good news is... Read full review »

I've only had it a week, but love it. I use it more than my d100 due to its size. There is a learning curve however and I havent figured out the d100 fully yet and I am now a little overwhelmed with having to learn this one too. I'm going to Europe soon and its the camera to take. It does... Read full review »

Pros Great photos, easy to use, small
Cons Pricey, some buttons malplaced, non-threaded lense

I originally started out with the Minolta Dimage A2, but sent it back when I found the colors to be a little off and the pictures soft. I ordered the Nikon 8700 because I had heard they fixed the problem of focusing in low light conditions from the 5700.

I ordered the verticle... Read full review »

Pros Sharp pictures
Cons Too much contrast
Recommended it? Yes

It feels very good in your hands and it performs excellent. It will give you very nice, sharp and well saturated pictures.

But I have noticed a little problem and is that it has too much contrast, even if you set the contrast to normal or low(lighted areas are too bright and dark areas... Read full review »

Very Good, but Not Perfect

bymtspace Aug 4, 2005

Pros Easy to Use, Sharp, Flexible, Good basic software, Good Color.
Cons Weakness in the Magenta-Red part of the spectrum. Occasional Focus Problem.
Recommended it? Yes

The Nikon 8700 is my fourth camera; my second digital camera. In almost every way it pulls its weight. Under most favorable conditions it takes crisp photos with good, accurate color. And under most of the conditions when the image is flawed, the fault is my own - usually it can be traced to not... Read full review »

Excellent camera when the SLR is out of reach

Pros easy to use, excellent resolution and rendering
Cons some often used features can be hard to get to, size
Recommended it? Yes

As a graphic designer, I often find that I need to either shoot an image at a specific angle myself - particularly when a client doesn't understand print resolution vs. web resolution. I also enjoy taking landscape shots. The coolpix 8700 is a "prosumer" camera - low end pro camera or higher end... Read full review »

Nikon Coolpix 8700 is an Excellent Evolutionary Upgrade

Cons Lack of manual focus ring

The Nikon Coolpix 8700 is an upgrade of the 5700, using the same magnesium alloy chassis, with some significant changes. Of course, the biggest change is the the growth from 5 to 8 megapixels. On a practical level, this means that flawless 16x20 prints are now a reality for advanced amateur digital... Read full review »
