The new Nikon Coolpix 8800 VR ----- VR for "Very RAD"?

byHoward_Creech Dec 15, 2004
113 Helpfuls 114 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros 8 megapixels, 10X stabilized zoom, and good ergonomics
Cons Noisy zoom, tendency to overexpose highlights, slower than it should be
Recommended it? Yes

The Coolpix 8800 VR is a radical new prosumer digicam, the fifth generation flagship (CP5000, CP5400, CP5700, CP8700) of Nikon's "bridge" digital camera family. Nikon's R&D folks designed this series of upscale digital cameras to provide users with most of the benefits of a digital SLR and all the... Read full review »

8800 Falls Short...FAR short

bysailingshot Dec 22, 2004

Pros Great lens, good build quality.
Cons Slow, slow Camera. Can't make the grade in challenging conditions.

"The Nikon 8800 is money poorly spent."

After a disappointing experience with the coolpix 8800 from Nikon I decided to return the 8800 in favor of the D70 DSLR from Nikon with the Nikkor 18-70mm lens kit. Like some people, I was under the (okay, silly!) impression that the 8800 could... Read full review »

Pros Many features. Excellent resolution at all zoom levels. Excellent image compression...
Cons Jerky zoom. Colour balance good but less than perfect.
Recommended it? Yes

Having purchased a Panasonic 5M pixel in Singapore a wanted a camera that would give better resolution and greater zooming power. The Nikon 8800 seemed to be the best value for money and to provide the features I needed so I bought one. I've owned a number of Nikon cameras's and can't say I've... Read full review »

The best for the price (at the moment)

Pros Love the ML-L3 remote control, it gets you in the picture.
Cons I hate the special batteries required.
Recommended it? Yes

Here is some buying information.

(1) The first thing you will need is a compact flash card, and here is what Nikon has to say as of 11/11/04

Nikon has tested the following cards and approved their use in the Coolpix 8800:

Nikon FC-CF All capacities

SanDisk... Read full review »

Great camera

byandy22111 May 10, 2007
7 Helpfuls 8 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Excellent image quality, point-and-shoot features/ease of use, zoom
Cons Requires tripod more than expected, Nikon proprietary accessories, bulky
Recommended it? Yes

I bought my 8800 a couple of years ago, mostly for the 10x zoom, and I am consistently impressed with it. The images produced are amazing and the camera is very easy to use (I am not an advanced photographer). It helps to always carry the user manual with the camera because there are too many... Good overall camera

bydadrumma Mar 13, 2005

Pros Highly recommended, 10x zoom, clear/sharp pictures, VR, great video, price
Cons write speed, noise in higher ISO's, manual focus
Recommended it? Yes

I bought this camera because it had all the features I wanted. The closest Nikon with VR costs way more than this one, and with 10x zoom the VR is necessary. Takes amazing pictures in daylight, and at night with long exposures. If you want to take good action night shots make sure to get a strong... Read full review »

Bit of a disappointment

byjsnape May 19, 2005
6 Helpfuls 7 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Battery life between charges, exposure options
Cons That'd be the auto focus mechanism.
Recommended it? No

This is a great camera if blurry shots are your thing. I'm thinking of putting my month old 8800 up on Ebay and taking what I can get for it and parlaying that into the D70. It's auto focus has let me down way too many times now. And auto focus is the only option. If clear shots on the first try... Read full review »

Perhaps the most common reason for poor quality photos, especially with a long zoom, is camera shake. I have had this camera for 10 days and have taken a few hundred pictures, many with a high level of zoom, all shot by hand. None have been blurry. All have been sharply focused with a high level of... Read full review »

NIKON 8800 I love it !

bythriftyshop Nov 26, 2004
6 Helpfuls 7 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Easy to use, zoom, macro performance, features, remote control, swivel LCD screen.
Cons Picture delay...so you will need to be prepared.
Recommended it? Yes

I am really glad that I bought this specific camera. I got a really great deal ($669) and I was happy about the improvements made from the 8700. I did my research, got frustrated, read some more, got confused, and then decided that it was going to be a risk just like any other buy but I wanted to... Read full review »

Next best thing to DSLR

byatherts May 20, 2005

Pros Image Stabilization (VR), 10x Zoom, full control or full auto, small size, swivel LCD
Cons Minor low light issues
Recommended it? Yes

If you have realistic expectations, this is a great camera. It is not a DSLR so don't expect the speed and capabilities. It is not a point and shoot camera.
It is a camera with a huge zoom, image stabilization and a lot of control over all factors of photography. Sure there are some... Read full review »
