The Pentax Optio S A Very Small Digital Camera With Some Very Large Problems

Pros Ultra-compact, 3 megapixels, 3X optical zoom, incredible feature set, 11 MB?s of internal...
Cons Soft images, poor shot to shot times, short battery life,
Recommended it? Yes

Despite more than half a century as a major player in the photo-optics world, Pentax is a relative unknown in the digital imaging arena. The company is probably best known for the K1000, one of the most popular and longest running 35mm camera models ever marketed and for inventing the instant... Read full review »

Optio S : That's not a mint in the Altoids tin! A curiously small camera.

byyusakugo Apr 22, 2003
63 Helpfuls 64 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Size!, three megapixels, 3X optical zoom, some manual features, WOW factor, more!
Cons Expensive, images not quite as sharp as high end 3MP camera, control joystick.
Recommended it? Yes

Technically, I only had the Optio S between 1 to 2 weeks depending on when I finally place this review up (I started it 4/21/03). I recently went through a major selloff of many of my digital cameras keeping for my own personal use a Canon S400, S45, and Nikon CoolPix 995 (which I can't seem to be... Read full review »

Perfect Portability, Perfect Value

Pros Small Size and Excellent housing build-quality. Awesome photos for a camera this small!
Cons Slightly expensive, lack of a charger cradle.
Recommended it? Yes

This was the second digital camera I purchased. My first one was a Fujifilm 6800z Porsche design camera (see my review of it). I like the Fujifilm camera, however it is a slight bit bulky for simply carrying it around casually. This Pentax camera, on the other hand, is extremely portable. It can... Read full review »

OPTIO S: Room For Improvement

bymillerre Apr 25, 2003
12 Helpfuls 13 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Size makes it easy to have with you always.
Cons Just OK picture quality - nothing to write home about
Recommended it? No

I've had my OPTIO S for 2 weeks and here's what I find:

Great size – that's why I bought it!

My main disappointment is picture quality. My wife has the Canon S230 and pictures from it are more vibrant and the color is truer. I have a Kodak CX4300 and its pictures are also better... Read full review »

Pentax Optio S60 is it worth it?

Pros Yes if other cameras have same easy to use features, and nice images.
Cons No-if shutter problem and LCD screen is consistent problem with this line of cameras.
Recommended it? Yes

I bought this compact camera last summer via an internet retailer. Outside of the short battery life (even with rechargeable batteries- you will run through 2 of them easily in less than a week); it was functioning pretty well.
I am an amateur photographer, this is a great camera to use if you... Read full review »

Cons Shot to shot time; initially awkward controls

I am a snapshot photographer and not a serious enthusiast or professional. My first digital camera was a 2MP Toshiba PDR-M5 that I bought in 1998. I found that I loved the digital format. However, as the technology developed, I found myself wanting better resolution, contrast and battery life. Most... Read full review »

Is that a camera?

byerick Jun 3, 2003

Pros Size, 3x Optical Zoom, 3.2MP... did I say size?
Cons How battery is charged and location of shutter and on/off buttons
Recommended it? Yes

I've been looking for a small digital camera for quite a while now. My first (and only other) digital camera was this huge AGFA 640x480 camera that ate up AA batteries even when I wasn't using it. Comparing the Pentax Optio-S to it is like comparing walking to a Star Trek transporter -- HUGE... Read full review »

Pros Take Anywhere Size with full features
Cons Small buttons take some getting used to, no case included
Recommended it? Yes

I started out in the digital camera world with the Toshiba PDR 2300. I loved taking digital pictures but unfortunately due to the cameras rather large size I found myself forgetting to take it with me on many occasions. So the time came when I decided to go smaller. There are many cameras on the... Read full review »

**** Introduction ****
Looking back at some of my reviews you might think that I have a lot of camera's, well I do like my gadgets but I work in the photographic industry so it's usually me that gets saddled with the responsibility of buying camera's or at least giving advice to family... Read full review »

Quality Camera in Tiny Package

Pros quality in a tiny package, looks, ease of use
Cons 'on/off' button might be confused with shutter release button, battery...
Recommended it? Yes

I've owned this tiny camera for less than a week and have bonded quickly. Potential photographs are where you find them, often at unexpected moments. It is great to have a quality 3.2 megapixel camera in a leather over-size business card case (bought separately by my lovely wife) in my pants... Read full review »
