If you haven?t heard, I like to take pictures. Let me rephrase that. I?m hopelessly, utterly, pathetically obsessed with photography. The addiction began when I was just a small child, who stole my parents? camera and went hog-wild at the zoo. My love of photography continued throughout my life,... Read full review »

Expensive, yet still a bargain!

Pros Image stabilization.
Cons Expensive
Recommended it? Yes

This lens had barely hit the "streets" when I first tried to buy it. Advance publicity had made it such a hot item that it was unavailable for weeks. By that time cooler, more sensible minds had convinced me I shouldn't purchase it. I bought a much cheaper 75-300mm lens and gave it barely a thought... Read full review »

Canon EF 75-300mm f4-5.6 III - Decent Starter Telephoto... But Not Much More Beyond That

bysoupcraze Jan 26, 2008
20 Helpfuls 21 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Light-Weight; Inexpensive; Smooth Zoom
Cons Softness; Rotating Front Element; Cheap Build
Recommended it? No

As I was looking into getting a nice mid-range telephoto lens for myself, I borrowed a low-end Canon EF 75-300mm f4-5.6 III lens. This is the lowest-end variant of Canon's consumer level 75-300mm market. The version I used was the non-USM variant. I used it for about three weeks before I decided on... Read full review »

A wildlife photographer's dream

Pros stability, speed(IS off), versatility, price
Cons weight, decreased speed(IS on)
Recommended it? Yes

History:

I have always been fascinated shooting wildlife (animal and human) in their natural habitat (My favorite: a trip to Kruger National Park, South Africa). This sometimes requires an extremely steady hand and/or a really fast shutter speed. To obtain extremely fast shutter, one needs... Read full review »

Get the IS version if you can afford it--not the best of Canon's offerings

bysuemccartin Apr 7, 2005
16 Helpfuls 17 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros good zoom range, light
Cons slooowwwww (high max aperature), no IS system.
Recommended it? Yes

I bought this lens at the same time I bought my digital rebel body because I wanted a somewhat long zoom for shooting the tigers at busch gardens (from several hundred feet up on the bridge). For what I wanted it for, 300mm just isn't quite enough even though on the Rebel the effective zoom is... Read full review »

A solid higher-end consumer lens

byhuntzinger Mar 9, 2005

Pros If you want a lightweight & effective 300mm lens, this is a great choice.
Cons Some reports of incompatibility with the 10D digital body.
Recommended it? Yes

Its always hard to get the perfect lens. Especially if you don't want to spend a ton of money.

In the "ton of money" catagory, you have Canon's "L" lens series. Generally, the prices start at $1000 and go up from there. Even if you do have the money, many of the "L" lenses also are pretty... Read full review »

Canon 75-300 III USM: Inexpensive and handy!

bysoulgrind1 Jun 19, 2000
14 Helpfuls 15 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Low price, nice lens range to have
Cons fairly high aperture (f/4-5.6)
Recommended it? Yes

This lens was very cheap, and very nice addition to my gear. I bought the lens for a little under $200 through an internet retailer. The 75-300 range is very useful in many situations including close-ups and portraits.

I want to stress that I have the version III USM lens and not the... Read full review »

the inexpensive alternative

13 Helpfuls 14 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros inexpensive, light
Cons soft, vignetting, poor construction, small aperture.
Recommended it? Yes

The 75-300 does the job and that's all. It has no features that make you say WOW!

Construction: poor... It has a "cheap" feeling. The rings are not tight, so the controls are not precise. You can hear some pieces ratteling when you shake the lens... Being constructed so loose, the lens is... Read full review »

Bringing the Action Up Close

bycchan006 Apr 28, 2000
11 Helpfuls 12 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Inexpensive for its features, great value
Cons Autofocus motor is slow
Recommended it? Yes

After purchasing the original Canon EOS Rebel second-hand few years ago, I realized that the 35-80mm lens that came with the camera did not have enough magnification to bring auto racing actions up close. So I decided to start shopping for a zoom lens. I found this Canon lens for sale, about $250... Read full review »

The hidden gem of the Zuiko Digital line!

byrfman Jul 17, 2006
16 Helpfuls 17 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Excellent macro performance, very sharp, lightweight, inexpensive.
Cons Not weatherproofed. Maximal aperture is not extremely fast.
Recommended it? Yes

Continuing my review series of Olympus Zuiko Digital lenses for the Four Thirds system digital cameras, I've chosen to review the ZD 35mm macro lens. This lens is part of the "budget" range of lenses, and is currently the only lens capable of 1:1 magnification in the entire lineup of Four Thirds... Read full review »
