Thirteen...........pay attention.......

Pros Story, Characterizations, Performances
Cons Very few, and all relatively minor
Recommended it? Yes

Being a parent is scary. The fevers and rashes of babyhood, the bumps and falls of toddlerhood, the realization that their math is too hard for you in elementary school. Every moment of fear, though, is more than countered by a moment of joy, gratitude and love so big it hurts. Until you reach the... Read full review »

Thirteen: Another Disturbing Film About Self-Destructive Teens

bybeckytcy Sep 24, 2003

Pros raw, emotional, moving, Holly Hunter, Evan Rachel Wood
Cons not exactly an original idea, race issues
Recommended it? Yes

When my friends and I left the cinema after seeing Thirteen, several of us felt nauseated and dizzy. The film is graphic, disturbing, and deeply moving. It's terrifying because it all feels so real. Director Catherine Hardwicke uses grainy-looking 16 mm film and many moving camera angles to make... Read full review »

Pros Absolutely realistic.
Cons Extremely mature content.

I rented thirteen from Blockbuster about a year ago and I immediately went out and bought the DVD. I've since moved and I guess the movie got lost somewhere from point A to point B. Recently, I saw thirteen on the Independent Film Channel. It reminded me of why the movie had such an impact on me,... Read full review »

Thirteen, and I Don't Know What I Want

bythevoid99 Apr 7, 2004

Pros Catherine Hardwicke's Surreal Direction & the Raw Performances of Hunter, Wood, &...
Cons Some Minor Flaws in Character Developments.

Growing up is indeed hard to do, especially when you're a teenager. By the time of adolescence, old childhood friendships fall apart, innocence is lost, and identities become blurred, and then come the confrontational tension between parent and child. That is something not seen in a show like... Read full review »

THIRTEEN: Thirteen Steps to Nowhere

Pros Strong performances, the camerawork, themes
Cons A bit too extreme at times
Recommended it? Yes

Teenage rebellion has not only become an important topic in society today, but has also become a very widely used theme in many films today. This ranges from films such as American Beauty to all Larry Clark films to even silly comedies such as The New Guy. So what would make Thirteen any different... Read full review »

Hmmm, a movie where teenagers rebel, take drugs and have sex...how original!

Pros Generally engaging and interesting film
Cons Painfully adheres to endless stereotypes and mythology
Recommended it? No

At times, being the avid movie-goer I am, I wonder how life would be if all the cliches contained within movies happened in real life. You know, a world where fights always break out at hip-hop clubs; where prostitutes are always, deep down inside, good people; where elderly black men are always... Read full review »

THIRTEEN: A Number Which Should Not Be Unlucky for American Girls.

bymacresarf1 Sep 29, 2003

Pros Evan Rachel Wood as Tracy; Nikki Reed, writer and antagonist; First-time Director...
Cons An understandable racism is inherent in the view of the young author.

It is a commonplace, thinking about THIRTEEN, that significant social developments in America, good or bad, spread across the country from the East and West Coast. With the close of the Frontier, according to the Bureau of the Census in 1890, matters of importance began to shift more to the West... Read full review »

Thirteen: Reality, The ultimate contraceptive

byromasuave Sep 3, 2003

Pros Solid, realistic depiction of a teenager in crisis
Cons More of an after school special than a motion picture

The film that brings new meaning to the saying, "when I was your age". Being a mature male and preparing to have my own kids very soon I was shocked and quite disturbed from what I've seen. The new teenage generation is seemingly a new breed of rebel and this film reflects the painful reality of a... Read full review »

Parents, are you tired of having to go sit through the movies your children want to see? How would you like to see something frightening? Not some stupid slasher flick or monster movie, but something that will actually terrify you? Then check out Nikki Reed's Thirteen (1 hour 39 minutes, R, 20th... Read full review »

Thirteen: Hollywood's latest teen exploitation flick is inexplicably taken seriously

byfactotum Apr 7, 2004

Pros Holly Hunter, it looks authentic
Cons Beyond belief.

The current trend in Hollywood seems to be to remake anything that has resonance with moviegoers reared in the seventies and eighties no matter how wretched the original was or whether or not there is an actual groundswell of nostalgia for it (cf. Starsky & Hutch). Against that backdrop, then, it... Read full review »

THIRTEEN is Catherine Hardwicke's explosive portrait of teenage girls at their very worst. Mean manipulative conniving and utterly out of control these skinny sexy drug-addicted 13-year-old time bombs are nothing short of terrifying. Hardwicke's movie is brilliant in its ability to portray this phenomenon which comes off as very real. The skillful photography from cinematographer Elliot Davis communicates the most complicated themes of the film: insecurity confusion wanting to be liked and accepted and feeling like it's time to grow up fast. In an early scene protagonist Tracy Evan Rachel Wood a shy girl and good student approaches Evie Nikki Reed the school's ultra-popular bad girl and the two size up each other's clothing jewelry hair shoes socks and decide to go on a shopping spree. From there Tracy spirals downward copying Evie's every move in an aggressive game of daring each other to take increasingly dangerous risks--stealing getting piercings experimenting with sex drinking and taking drugs and much more. All the while Tracy's mom Holly Hunter who is a bohemian ex-alcoholic trying to be open-minded and supportive about her daughter's rebellion slowly loses her authority and her ability to cope with these volatile teens. A booming excellent soundtrack punctuates the hyper desperate manic mood of the girls' behavior and catalyzes the adrenaline rush that is THIRTEEN.
