The birth of anime in an innovative but flawed bit of genius
In the days before computers and anime, there was Hannah-Barbera, Warner Brothers, Disney and Ralph Bakshi. Bakshi, among other things, the technique of overlaying animation on live movement that came to such brilliant fruition in Gollum (the recent Lord of the Rings). This technique isn't... Wizards: For Adults Only
I saw this film years and years ago...not to make myself sound *too* old or anything. Strangely enough, I have often seen it in video stores in the children's section. It's as if adults aren't supposed to watch cartoons...ever. I always try to point out the error of putting this film there, but I... Read full review »
Funny as ****
First of all, I know this movie sometimes gets a bad rep for it's lack of any specific animation technique, but anyone who watches an animated movie just to criticize it's style needs to get out more.
"Wizards", with it's rather dark and adult-oriented humor and it's rather alternative...

A strange tale of what if
Before I talk about his movie, I will say I was once an experimental teen. That is how I found this crazy little cult flick. I don't do it now, but I still like the originality of this movie. It may be animated, but DO NOT let small children watch this.
The first few minutes you hear a...

Wizards - 70s Animation Resurrects The Nazis
I've seen "Wizards" about a half-dozen times since the late 70s, and my opinion of it has been pretty constant through that time. Basically, "Wizards" uses fairly conventional and simple animation, with a few tricks, to preach a very simple message against hate and war.
In a nutshell,...

When animation wasn't cool...
I've always been a fan of animation, even way back in the 70's when Wizards debuted and animation still had that "it's just a cartoon" reputation. Luckily in recent years there has been some change to that opinion thanks in part to the influx of Anime in the American market and CGI. I urge anyone... Read full review »
Have Short Alcoholic Wizard, Will Travel
I was thirteen.
It was dinner time.
My dad had gone out and rented a movie and popped it in for us to watch.
I stopped eating dinner...
And I watched in silent awe.
This was my first reaction to Wizards.
Some would judge this a somewhat adult movie to show a thirteen year...

The greatest Adult Cult Cartoon
This cartoon is like The Hobbit crossed with Pink Floyd's The Wall. It is rated PG, but it is tool long and adult oriented for children. There are many little things occurring though-out the film that children would not understand and would probably find boring.
The plot is that there are...

True Art. Brilliant and often Misunderstood.
I recently went back to watch this favorite of my teen years, and it's one of the few movies around that holds as much appeal to me now as when I first watched it.
Wizards is a classic Good vs. Evil fantasy tale, with "Good" embodied by the wizard Avatar, and the faeries and magic folk of...

"Just wake me up when the planet's destroyed."
1977's highly-imaginative Wizards is a one-of-a-kind animated fantasy film from controversial filmmaker Ralph Bakshi, who was previously known for his X-rated debut Fritz the Cat. Bakshi is the father of adult animation and presented himself as an alternative to the "fake" cartoons of Walt Disney... Read full review »

Wizards DVD
This uniquely 1970s blend of swords sorcery science fiction kung-fu fascism and nuclear holocaust was director Ralph Bakshi's first venture into fantasy after his grim urban epics STREETFIGHT and HEAVY TRAFFIC. In a postapocalyptic future that appears as a blend of World War II Europe and J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth a pint-size wizard named Avatar Bob Holt sounding like Peter Falk must save the world from a band of fascist mutants controlled by his evil twin brother Blackwolf Steve Gravers who likes to confuse enemy armies by projecting films of Adolf Hitler speeches during attacks. Painted live-action footage of advancing Nazi armies contrasts with Saturday-morning-c artoon-style animation of fairies and elves as Avatar travels through various magical and radioactive realms on his quest. Aiding him are a sexually promiscuous fairy queen Jesse Wells a hot-blooded warrior elf Mark Hamill fresh from his role in STAR WARS and Peace David Proval a misunderstood robot rebelling against his Blackwolf- controlled programming. A bizarre and psychedelic meditation on magic vs. technology this cult film still finds an audience on college campuses and will prove quite rewarding to viewers in the right frame of mind.
