Essential Bags for College

Unlike all my friends, who dread that first day back in August, heading back to school is something I look forward to all summer. Dreaming about waking up early, doing homework, taking midterms, and spending long hours in the library? Its crazy, I know. But shopping for school supplies, getting to see friends every day, and getting back into the routine have always been things I love about back-to-school season. Having just completed my first year of college at University of Colorado at Boulder, I know that going off to college for the first time can be a stressful and emotional time. This guide is designed to give first-time college students and their parents a glance at what you will need every day, from backpacks to laptop cases to carry-on luggage for trips home. The eBags website features many tools to help you pick the right bag for back-to-school, from product ratings and reviews to videos that will give you a sneak peak of all the bag's features. You'll find it all here!

Great Backpacks

A good, durable backpack is key to surviving all four years of college. Make sure you get one with enough space to hold your laptop, textbooks, notebooks, and binders for all those late-night treks to the library. I also picked some that had great colors and were unique so that nobody accidentally swipes your pack in class. These are my personal favorites, but there are many options available to fit every schedule and every person.

The Jansport Superbreak is a basic backpack with one main pocket and the front organizer pocket. This backpack comes in every color and pattern imaginable!

The North Face Isabella is a women's pack that is a great smaller alternative to a big, bulky backpack.

The North Face Recon runs a little larger but has the organization to keep everything you need for class so you never show up unprepared!

I love the bright colors on this High Sierra pack, and it's durability will last you through all four years of school.

Laptop Cases

Your laptop is one of your most valuable possessions in college. I use mine constantly and take it with me everywhere, so I invested in a good laptop case at the beginning of the year. I love all the bright colors and patterns available, including the AirCube case by Sumdex and the leopard print Designer Sleeve. The quilted eBags Laptop Sleeve comes in Horizontal and Vertical styles and 9 colors. Above I also included an iPad Case to protect your iPad from scratches and everyday wear and tear. This case also comes in gray.

Laptop Bags and Totes

Another alternative to a regular backpack and laptop case is a backpack specially-made to protect your laptop. You should also consider a messenger bag or a tote bag made for your laptop.

The eBags TLS Workstation backpack is highly organized backpack. The video on the eBags site will take you on a tour through all the compartments and pockets so you can really get a feel for the bag before you purchase it. You can find the video at http://video.ebags.com/v/5361/ebags-tls-workstation-laptop-backpack-backpacks/  You can also read more than 30 product reviews at http://www.ebags.com/product/ebags/tls-workstation-laptop-backpack/143143?productid=1370226#testimonialJump

The North Face Surge is another good option. It has a separate laptop compartment, as well. You can find a one-minute run down showing all the features of this bag at http://video.ebags.com/v/1865/one-minute-run-down-the-north-face-surge-backpack-backpacks/

The Timbuk2 is my favorite messenger bag. I love the messenger bag style for its convenience and ease of use in a compact space. Timbuk2 offers many sizes and colors of this bag, so check them all out!

Personally, I love carrying a tote to class because it is easy to pack only what I need for each class. This tote comes in many bright colors such as apple green and hot pink, as well as classic blacks and browns.

Tote Bags- From Class to the Weekend

If I could pick only one bag to buy, it would be a tote bag. I find that I use tote bags for everything: I carry them to class, to the library, and out on the weekends. These bags conveniently fit my laptop, a notebook or two, and some pens for class or you can throw in a change of clothes and head to a friend's house. They are so versatile and can function in so many different settings.

I love the bright colors of the Roxy tote, and the pattern of the Saltbox bag.

The Kate Spade bag comes in black as well, and this designer also offers some brightly colored totes. I would love to have this bag to take to class with me, it's the perfect size.

The Big Buddha tote comes in metallics and has a quilted design that's a little hard to see in the black color, but having a black bag is also very versatile.

Weekenders

If you're looking to head off-campus for the weekend, these bags are great small options for a trip to the mountains or the beach. Exploring your new city is one of the many great opportunities you get when going to college somewhere new and this is one opportunity you should definitely take advantage of. These bags are the right size to pack a few outfits, your toothbrush, and any other weekend essentials in a compact bag.
I love the teal leather and zipper detail on the Poverty Flats Weekender.

The LeSportsac bag is a basic weekender, but has plenty of space and a few organizing pockets.

The Tommy Hilfiger bag has a preppy feel and a great shape, perfect for any weekend outing.

But my personal favorite is The Sak Weekender. It has a great pattern without being too overwhelming and also a longer shoulder strap for easy carrying.

Luggage

Heading home for weekends and breaks is always fun,  but can be a hassle without the right luggage. These suitcases are small enough to glide you easily through security while carrying everything you might need. All of these bags are small enough to carry-on for most airlines (you can check out the eBags blog about TSA and airline requirements here: http://blog.ebags.com/post/carry-on-rules/). Having the right suitcase and keeping everything organzied can make your trip home much more enjoyable and leave more time to see family and friends before packing up and heading back to school again.

The Samsonite xSpace Spinner is our best selling carry-on bag. It is small at 21.5" but a breeze to get through security and store on the airplane.
The Samsonite Bright Lites bag is hard-sided and can withstand the damage of checked bag handlers. Also comes in bright pink and black.
The eBags Mother Lode eTech Mini Wheeled Duffel is a great option and its compartments and pockets make organizing a breeze.
The Jansport SuperBreak Rolling Suitcase is a little larger at 24" but makes a great bag for those longer breaks and will still qualify as a carry-on for most airlines.
